Endometriosis 101: what it is and why it's missed

What endometriosis is

Educational, not medical advice. Pending clinical review.

Tissue similar to the lining of the uterus grows where it shouldn't. It affects roughly 1 in 10 women and people with a uterus of reproductive age.

It is not "just cramps"

Pain that stops your life is not normal — even if it's been part of your cycle for years. It can show up before and during your period, but also at ovulation, during sex, or at the bathroom.

Why diagnosis takes years

On average it takes many years to be diagnosed. Symptoms get dismissed as normal period pain, and the only definitive test has historically meant surgery. A clear, longitudinal record of your symptoms is what helps your doctor see the pattern.

What helps

Track what you feel — the pain, where it is, the days, what makes it worse. Bring that record to your appointment and ask to be taken seriously.
